PHOTOGRAPHYToday - more than any other time in history - images bombard and envelop us. Television, print and the Internet unceasingly present images of people to emulate or help… historical icons to remember… products we need. It's within this new world of constant visual imagery, and the need for shock-value or aesthetic beauty, that photojournalism today must compete; to make a single image stand out and to get us to take the image – and what it is depicting – seriously. |
ART PROJECTSpirasi, in collaboration with CREATE, a leading national arts support organization providing services for arts development and practice in Ireland and IMMA ran an art project from August to October 2005 with a group of aged-out minors living in Dublin hostels. Artists, Louise Walsh (sculptor) and Christopher Harrington (photographer) worked with the group. The group used various media in a project aimed at allowing the young people express something of their lives in Ireland. |
STORYTELLINGIn summer 2006 22 participants gathered at SPIRASI to share and collect stories that they knew from their childhoods. Each story that was told triggered memories in others and over the weeks 22 different stories emerged. As they were narrated they were recorded and later on they were written down. The stories are all different and yet they are all strangely familiar. In this simple way they reflect both our diversity as peoples and our shared humanity. |
WEB DESIGNThe main focus of the project was two part. Firstly to give the participants a good grounding in the aesthetic sensibilities of web design with a strong focus on accessibility, form and function. Secondly, the participants were required to design and develop websites for each of the individual art projects run by Spirasi. |
